“You must have a Eugenic Certificate”




The history of eugenics in the United States is over 100 years. Around 1880, Sir Francis Galton, a biologist who studied the upper classes of Britain, concluded that a superior genetic makeup accounted for their high social position. Eugenics plays a crucial rule in U.S. history and is responsible for many policies and laws in late 19th century and through out the 20th century. For example, better babies and fitter family competition in 1920 at Kansas Free Fair; the Immigration Restriction League founded in 1894, examining immigrants by giving them literacy tests; disabled people such as deaf and feeble-minded were not allowed to marry; sterilized against their will.
